About The Olive Tree

About The Olive Tree

The olive tree is considered by many to be the "tree of life". Olive trees are usually harvested for many, in some cases hundreds of years. They are cut down only when they cannot be harvested any longer. Most olive wood carvings come from the trimmings; an essential process to healthy and proper growth of the trees. Solon's Olive protection law during the Athenian democracy (600 B.C.), in the first written legislation of the world, prohibited the cutting down of olive trees bar two per annum for the purposes of fuel to warm the people.
It was a branch of olive tree that was given as first prize to the first Olympians, symbolizing wisdom, will and virtue. The Working with olive wood is an art in its own right. Back to olive wood jewelry
