Your Health - Olive Oil Headaches, aspirin, and ibuprofen

The benefits of “The Mediterranean Diet” new to some of us is now moving on to greater heights.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is now gathering momentum in its benefits to our health especially in reducing cancer and heart problems. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have found that an ingredient in extra virgin olive oil – oleocanthal – has similar properties to ibuprofen, which has been linked to a lower risk of cancer and heart disease, as has aspirin.
The research concluded that Extra Virgin Oil – from the first pressing of the olives – might offer similar long-term advantages.

Olive variety - Koroneiki

Before you buy, a few things to check on the bottle label, look for:

EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
Blend of varieties" or better "single estate oil'
A FREE ACIDITY LEVEL OF LESS THAN 0.8%
‘superior category olive oil obtained directly from olives and solely by mechanical means’
DARK BOTTLES - HELP TO REDUCE THE DETERIORATING AFFECTS OF SUNLIGHT
THE SELL BY DATE - SHELF LIFE CAN BE UP TO 24 MONTHS - look for long dates of 18 months or more in the future - use your oil within 6 months of purchase and within 3months after opening.

Is there a harvest date?

There are many other issues to consider, such as taste, what to use it for? Olive oil books as a guide to buy are not much use as the olive oil is different every year and historic reference to a harvest in a bottle is only good when it was harvested and tasted and no guide to future taste or quality. There is an Almanac which gives a snap shot of top quality oils at each harvest from around the world available to Club Members
